The Miracles of Transplantation

Organ transplantation has been called one of the most miraculous advancements in medicine.  There are thousands of transplant recipients alive and well today after being told they only had months to live.  The transplant process is not easy.  Some candidates have a seemingly endless wait for an available organ, while others face the difficult task of relying on caregivers for support before, during and after surgery.

Even though the road is not an easy one, most recipients enjoy an improved life after years of illness.  Who better to be able to relate to the roller-coaster ride of transplantation than someone who has a walk through a similar path?

Donate Life Ohio has launched its Green Chair Campaign to encourage Ohioans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. Check out our video and stay tuned for our public service announcements on TV, radio and online. They feature Governor Ted Strickland, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, OSU football coach Jim Tressel, and everyday Ohioans who have been touched by organ, eye and tissue donation.  Click here.

Nationwide, how many are waiting for life saving organ transplants?

 (As of January 28, 2010)

Waiting list candidates:

  105,347

Transplants Jan. - Oct. 1 2009:

  23,847

Donors Jan. - Oct. 1 2009:

  12,186

Organ Recipient: Eric Runnion

Transplant date: January 3, 2007- kidney from living donor

I think getting a kidney transplant meant simply getting my life back.  I was tethered to that machine three times a week, for 4 ½ hours each time.  I’m forever grateful to my donor.  Words cannot describe how thankful I am.  I was given a second chance at life.  Now I’m able coach my daughters basketball team, continue to play sports (went to the 2008 Transplant Games in Pittsburgh- 2 medals), and lead a more active life.  I’m now able to work full-time again; and even better- go on vacations again.  Simply able to enjoy life.

TRIO Greater Cleveland Chapter 2010 Corea Scholarship

TRIO Greater Cleveland Chapter sponsors the second annual scholarship in memory of Michael A. Corea.  $1,000 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded to organ transplant recipients, who are Ohio residents. Generous donations by family and friends support this scholarship in honor of Mike, who was born with Biliary Artesia, a rare degenerative liver disease causing him to become a liver recipient at thirteen. Mike lived each day to its fullest, taking nothing for granted, and was not afraid to fail. Mike also became an organ donor when his young life abruptly ended three days before his Ohio State graduation.

The application form is available to download. All applications are due no later than June 30, 2010.    CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD APPLICATION
